Cleaning Your Lights

If like us and you’ve got the Hinching bug, you might be wondering what’s the best way to clean your lighting products to make them gleam.

We recommend that our products are cleaned with a soft dry cloth and abrasive materials/chemicals are never used as they may damage your product and you don’t want that! Whenever cleaning your products remember to be gentle for the same reason.

Most importantly, always switch off the power supply before cleaning. Wait until the bulb has cooled before handling.

Want more detailed cleaning tips see below.

How To Clean Shades – Ceiling, Pendant Shades, Floor & Table Lamps

Extra care needs to be taken with shades, especially if they’re fabric! Always handle our pendant shades by the fitting, you don’t want to dent the shade or introduce any marks by mistake.

First switch off the supply of your light and carefully remove the bulb and  shade from your fitting. Helpful hint, place your bulb in an empty bowl to prevent it rolling off and smashing, this is an easy niggling mistake to make!

For shades gently clean with a soft microfiber cloth using a gentle sweeping motion to remove any dust. For a pleated fabric shade or an unusual shaped/textured shade, reach those creases by gently brushing with a small soft brush such as a clean makeup brush.

An alternative way to clean a fabric shade is to use a hairdryer on a cool setting and blast the shade at approx. 25cm away to remove any dust.

If your shade has dirt marks or stain that are not disappearing when using the above methods.. We never recommend wetting your shade BUT if it must be done try very slightly dampening your clean microfiber cloth then lightly brushing your shade with it. You can add a tiny amount of a delicate fabric detergent to a bowl of water and slightly dampen your cloth. When cleaning your shade this way, be very careful to preserve the quality of the shades fabric. You may need to do the full shade rather than spot cleaning which may give you water marks. Always ensure the shade is fully dry before reattaching it to your fitting and switching on.

How To Clean Your Bases & Metal Work

Lightly dust your metal work with a microfiber cloth or duster, we recommend a bendy one for making getting in between any gaps easier.

Dont forget about the cable on floor and table lamps, these can collect dust over time. Run a soft microfibre cloth down the length of the cable to remove any marks.
